Satellite Coffee ready for franchises

Satellite Cofee is ready to get its franchising system off the ground.

Jean Bernstein, founder and CEO of the homegrown coffee shop chain, says the company – which announced earlier this year its move toward franchising – is prepared to start offering those franchise opportunities next month.

The goal is to have six new franchise units open in 2014 and another 14 in 2015, Bernstein told the Journal.

Ideally, the first franchises will be local, though Bernstein said the company is also open to starting in Arizona, Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma and Kansas.

“We want to stay regional only – we don’t intend to zip on over to New York or California any time soon,” Bernstein said. “We need to do this close to home so we can … definitely mind the store closely.”

Founded in 1998, Satellite currently boasts eight company-owned locations around Albuquerque, but Bernstein says the metro area is ripe for another seven shops.

“We just don’t have enough coverage,” she said. “It would be great if somebody would like to join us (with franchise locations).”

Bernstein said Satellite will market its franchise opportunities in coffee-industry circles and that the company is interested only in partners with applicable food-service experience.

“We’re really serious about making sure everybody is successful in this,” she said.

She could not say how much franchise fees would cost.
