Franchise News India, Panaji: The Dempo group of companies has shown growing interest in the Indian Super League (ISL), organized by IMG-Reliance, and are preparing a bid for the Goa franchise.

IMG-Reliance along with Star India have invited bids through the Invitation To Bid or ITB documents for nine cities – Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Goa, Guwahati, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune – of which the top eight will get the nod.

“As I said in the past, if at all we look at the Indian Super League, it will be as a commercial franchise business opportunities. We are yet to get the bid document but at some stage I intend to get the bid document. We will see how it goes once we have the bid document in hand,” Dempo chairman Shrinivas Dempo told TOI.

The tender document costs 5 lakh and the base price has been fixed at 120 crore over a term of 10 years.

“I am told that the bid amount for all the centres is the same. I am a little bit concerned with the market absorbability of Goa. That’s something we need to have a closer look at,” said Dempo, who is the vice president of All India Football Federation and president of Goa Football Association.

Dempo has been India’s most successful team of the decade, winning five National titles and almost every tournament worth its name. With Dempo pitching for the ISL, there are fears that the current I-League squad may not get the attention, and funding, it has got in the past. Dempo, however, allayed such fears.

“I think these are two separate things. We are very focused and determined that we will sustain the I-League club. That’s the core of Indian football. I believe there are some concerns that ISL will take over the I-League.

“We need to make the I-League stronger and at whatever forum I am, I will make the right noises. If at all any of my group companies decide to bid for the (ISL) franchise, it will be a separate entity. There may, however, be common synergies which can help each other,” explained Dempo.

Apart from Dempo, another club from Western India is expected to bid for a franchise. Bangalore FC were also reported to be keen on the Bangalore franchise but the I-League leaders have since denied reports.
